At the beginning of June first class went on our school tour to Celtic Adventures in Clogherhead. We had a fantastic fun filled day doing loads of different activities including go-karting, archery, dodgeball and lots of team building games. Everyone had a brilliant time!!!
We've had a busy couple of months here in first class. Here are a few photos of some of the things we've been up to! :)
Congratulations to our first group of boys and girls to achieve the bronze award from Food Dudes!! They have brought a portion of fruit and vegetables in for their lunch for five days and are now on their way to gaining their Silver award! Many other boys and girls should also gain their Bronze award this week. Keep up the healthy eating everyone!! :)
In our class we have a sacred space for anyone to take a moment to say a prayer to God or to have a moment to themselves. Our daffodils are a sign of Spring in the classroom and our St Brigid's cross was made by Zion for the altar following from Loretta showing the boys and girls how to make them on St Brigid's day.
To celebrate Chinese new year we made colourful Chinese dragons for art. We also made paper lanterns to celebrate the Chinese lantern festival. The boys and girls listened to the stories of the origins of the lantern festival from over 2000 years ago and how the Chinese animals of the Zodiac were selected by the Jade Emperor. The dragon continues to overcome until it finds success! We decorated our lanterns traditionally with images of fruit, flowers and trees.
This month we have been learning about life on a farm, dairy farmers and how people made butter using a churn long ago. We then made butter ourselves using cream two ways. The boys and girl used some elbow grease by shaking the cream in the bottle causing the cream to thicken and the liquid to separate making butter. We also made some more by whisking the butter in a bowl. The boys and girls thought it was delicious spread on bread and the next day wrote up instructions on how to make it. A great activity to repeat at home!
To get into the Halloween spirit we made some icky slime!!
The children mixed cornflour, water and green dye together. When they stirred it with a spoon slowly the slime was liquid but if they mixed it quickly they found it turned to a solid. We all enjoyed getting our hands into it too!!
Welcome back to all the new boys and girls of first class!
Here are some photos of what we have been doing.
Our caterpillars were drawn and painted following us reading the book 'The crunching munching caterpillar' and our blends of blue sea and sky scapes were painted after we read the book 'The smallest whale'. The boys and girls made predictions of what would happen in these stories and came up with some great alternative story lines!
Our medals were inspired by the Rio Olympics, the children discussed their achievements then made a medal symbolising a personal achievement or talent.
We drew pictures of and discussed what a healthy lunch should contain and the boys and girls are very good at bringing a healthy lunch to school each day.
For Valentine's Day the boys and girls made Valentine's wreaths for gifts as well as cards. We also combined the celebrations with Pancake Tuesday and had Valentine's pancakes!
We have been busy planting this month. Last week the boys and girls planted parsley and made predictions on how long it will take to sprout. This week the pupils planted cress. They decorated their pot with a picture of a face. We're waiting now for the cress to grow to add the "hair"!
To mark Valentine's Day we wrote a class poem about the things we love in school. The boys and girls discussed what they love about school then we wrote it together making up lines that rhymed with each other. We hope you like it!
Our class poem
I really like my class,
and just want to say,
We love to come here,
Maths and english stations,
are so much fun,
We also love when Brian,
gives us a bun!
On Wednesdays and Fridays,
We go to the hall,
racing and chasing,
and fun with the ball,
In the aistear room,
I play with my friend,
Swimming, dancing, Golden time,
I wish it wouldn't end!
Here are a few photos of the boys and girls work including their favourite Christmas present, our New Year's resolutions and some of our art work.
